What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?
I currently work in the finance team supporting the business and corporate unit within Openreach which mostly provides Ethernet connectivity to businesses. I also support the Chief Engineer unit which is at the cutting edge of new technologies and the roll out of fibre to the premises (FTTP).
On any given day my tasks can range from producing month end and ad hoc reports, collating General Manager information packs, running reviews and tracking actions. I also own a cost line for the business unit, making sure we don’t spend more than budget and advising the business how to best manage their requirements within that budget.
Most enjoyable moment/project so far?
Enjoyment for me is measured by my success when I’ve wholeheartedly dedicated myself to something. A couple of months ago I was asked if I would organise the Openreach Finance Learning Week. This is held twice a year to help and develop the whole finance team in Openreach. I arranged a series of knowledge calls ranging from tips to develop a career in finance, new product launches on the horizon and learning about new tools to dig up ditches in Wales for faster FTTP deployment! I also set up a blog where I uploaded replays, information packs, and even vlogs (video footage of Openreach engineers in action, filmed and edited by myself and colleagues). After a lot of time, effort and a few late nights along the way, the positive feedback I got and self-development I learned made it really worthwhile and is something I am really proud of.
Why did you choose the apprenticeship route?
I was always very studious at school and loved learning but part of me always knew that university just wasn’t my thing. My love of learning meant I wanted to continue to study but I needed a more practical way of doing it. The apprenticeship route was ideal, it gave me the ability to leave school and go straight into work whilst still gaining that same level of academic qualification as I would at university. I loved that I could become a fully qualified accountant and do a full time job at the same time!
My immediate goal is to complete my CIMA qualification in the next 2.5 years and to complete my apprenticeship. Further on from that, who knows, but I would love to progress into a managerial role following on from my apprenticeship and really make a difference within the business.
