Finance apprentice

What do you get up to in your day-to-day role?

In internal trading, I am responsible for the inputting and processing of internal transactions between the lobs of BT. This involves a variety of things such as checking and raising invoices, mini feeds, ad hoc transactions and accruals. Within finance the majority of this happens within the last 2 weeks of the month. Leading up to this I deal with various types of reporting to ensure transactions have been correctly processed from the previous month and if needed, look to correct any issues that may come about.

I have recently been appointed as a South West representative for “The Apprentice Network” whose aim is to help apprentices achieve career success through networking and personal development, along with providing them with a point of contact across geographical and LOB boundaries.
Alongside work, I attend college to study for my CIMA (Charted Institute of Management Accountants) qualification.

Most enjoyable moment/project so far?

During my short time here at BT there I have already had the opportunity to take a tour round the BT Sport studios, and also go up to the top of the BT Tower, both amazing experiences in which I thoroughly enjoyed. Coupled with this I have had the opportunity to meet Tony Chanmugam, Chief Finance Director of BT which was beyond inspirational to say the least!

Why did you choose the apprenticeship?

My original plan straight out of school was to head off to university which seems to be the norm now-a-days! After a long time thinking about it I decided to defer and take a year out to really think about whether it was right for me. I then started looking into finance jobs and stumbled upon a few apprenticeships but BT’s stood out more than the rest. The opportunity to work for such a prestigious company like BT was one I liked. The apprenticeship offers the chance to study towards an internationally recognised qualification (CIMA) and the support that BT offer whilst going through the apprenticeship is like no other I’ve seen. It’s such a brilliant opportunity to be part of such a forward thinking and innovative business. I decided to apply to BTand lo and beholdhere I am today and couldn’t be happier.

Future aspirations

Firstly my main aim is to complete and pass all my examinations and become a fully qualified CIMA accountant. I then aspire to work my way through BT experiencing as much as I can, different LOBs and different positions. I would one day like to be in a senior position within BT and most importantly make a big difference to the company.
