The impact of AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve human rights. For example, it could help diagnose medical conditions more quickly and accurately.

There could be some negative impacts though – so we’re looking at how to use AI ethically and responsibly to prevent or minimise them.

One concern is about a lack of transparency and accountability in automated decision-making processes. AI systems work on data that’s fed into them. If this were biased or poor quality then it could lead to discrimination and bad decisions. So we need to aim for clear decision-making criteria based on correct, complete, bias-free data.

Like any new technology AI brings opportunities and poses risks – but it’s not something to be scared of. We already use AI for network planning, reducing nuisance calls and detecting cyber threat patterns. Plus we work with organisations like MIT to lead innovation and explore the subject more.

We responded to the UK Government’s consultation on the new Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation. And we are engaged in the developing debate at a national, European and global level.
