Mike McTighe to be first Openreach Chairman
In July 2016, as part of Ofcom's Digital Communications Review (DCR), we promised to make governance changes to further enhance the independence, autonomy and transparency of Openreach, BT's local fixed network business.
Central to these changes was the creation of an Openreach Board with an independent chairman and a majority of independent members. We're now delivering on that promise.
A more independent Openreach to serve the needs of industry
The newly created Openreach Board will be accountable for setting the strategy and overseeing and managing the performance of Openreach. It will ensure that Openreach treats all customers equally while, at the same time, investing in better service, broader coverage and faster speed broadband.
We're delighted that Mike McTighe has agreed to be the first Chairman of the Openreach Board. Openreach will benefit from Mike's detailed industry and regulatory knowledge. He's an experienced telecoms executive and regulator who spent eight years on the Board of Ofcom, from 2007 to 2015. He's also held a variety of non-executive roles following an executive career spent largely with Cable and Wireless, Philips, Motorola, and GE.
Mike will take up his role in January and will be instrumental in selecting further independent members to join the Board, which will operate from early 2017.
The DCR process is ongoing. We remain in discussions with Ofcom to reach a voluntary agreement which we believe is the best way forward and we're hopeful that this significant move can help to underpin a sustainable, proportionate and fair regulatory settlement that is good for customers, shareholders, employees, pensioners and investment in the UK’s digital future.
