Business in the Community Programmes – EPIC & RISE
Business in the Community Ireland runs employment programmes tackling issues of integration and social inclusion and BT Ireland is proud to support two of these programmes, EPIC and RISE.
EPIC – Employment for People from Immigrant Communities – is an employment programme run by Business in the Community which works with immigrants and refugees to help them integrate into Irish society.
RISE - Refugee Integration, Skills and Employability - is a new programme set up in 2017 specifically designed to support refugees to understand, appreciate and integrate successfully into Irish society and to improve their English.
The partnership between BT and the EPIC Programmes started in 2008 to tackle immigrants’ needs to improve their IT skills, to increase their chances of applying for jobs and education courses. Since 2008, BT has provided IT training for 1,300 people as part of the EPIC programme.
BT provides -
- A trainer to deliver 2 days IT Training to every EPIC pre-employment training group (14/15 groups per year)
- A BT instructor to review assignments completed by potential participants to assess their training needs
- BT Certificates of Participation to clients on the completion of the training
Participants increase their knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, improve their level of English by learning work-focused language related IT and increase job seeking abilities.
Supporting good causes
Every year BT employees across Ireland raise thousands of pounds for charities and community groups close to their hearts.
Irish Cancer Society
BT Ireland has developed an annual fundraising and volunteering platform for cancer charities, which has raised in excess of €680,000 for Irish Cancer Society and Marie Curie NI over the last six years.
In 2017, BT Ireland’s strong workforce across ROI and NI donated in excess of nearly 4,000 volunteer hours of their time for both charities. The funds raised represent a record for BT's partnership with the charities, beating all other years in terms of volunteers, hours put in and funds raised.
Give As You Earn
BT support the charity sector in a number of ways, since January 2017 BT Ireland has donated nearly €80,000 to a number charities, nearly double the amount donated by the company last year.
These donations are made through the BT “Give As You Earn Scheme”, a platform which allows employees donate from their salary to a number of causes and each donation is matched by BT Ireland.
We also raise significant money through MyDonate, BT’s not-for-profit online fundraising and donation platform. The platform offers fundraisers a way to make sure more of the money they raise goes to the people who need it most. We don’t take commission and there are no set-up fees – it’s free to use. Through MyDonate, we provide charities and other non-profit organisations with secure online payment processing, call centres and technical support to run major telethons and online appeals.
We have set a goal to inspire two-thirds of our people to get involved by 2020.
We believe that volunteering not only engages our people in helping society, but also helps our business. We enable employees to take up to three working days a year as volunteer days. We want them to use these days and bring back the skills and experience they gain back into their roles with us.
In 2017, BT staff volunteered 10,519 hours supporting and raising money for 497 local charities close to their hearts.

And we know that having people from all walks of life makes us a more creative and innovative company. That variety of experience, culture and background allows our teams to truly use the power of communication to make a better world, giving everyone products and services which actually make a difference in their lives.
We make sure we do whatever we can to support our people too: making them feel valued and included and unlocking their potential is essential. We're incredibly proud that two of our leaders appeared in the Green Park Top 100 Influential BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnicities) Business Leaders 2016 list, and that some of our female leaders have recently received Women of the Future, Everywoman in Technology and Rising Stars in Technology awards.
What's more, our people are able to connect through our people networks. Everyone can join our gender equality, ethnicity, LGBT+, ability, faith and carers' networks – they offer support and let the business know what's important to them so we can improve and develop the whole business.
We are members of the 30% club, a global group highlighting an organisation’s belief in the importance of gender diversity and setting a target of 30% female representation in their senior leadership team.
We are also active members of Connecting Women in Technology (CWIT), a group who all share a common goal of attracting, retaining and promoting females in the technology sector.
In 2017, we become a founding sponsor of OUTstanding in the Republic of Ireland. OUTstanding has been working in the UK for several years, developing programmes and events for companies to help develop, nurture, mentor and showcase LGBT talent within their organisations.
