Broadband in Wales
A BT partnership with the Welsh Government will see the broadband landscape in Wales transformed, providing broadband speeds 15 times faster than those currently available.
BT has been announced as the preferred partner to deliver Superfast Cymru. This exciting development, which will bring superfast broadband to 96% of homes and businesses across Wales, is above and beyond BT’s existing commercial footprint in Wales and takes the total investment in Welsh fibre broadband to around £425 million. Funding for the project will see approximately £220 million invested by BT, with £58 million from the Welsh Government and an additional contribution of £57 million from the UK Government through the Broadband Delivery UK scheme. A further £90 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) will be provided subject to the timing of state aid approval.
The Fibre to the Cabinet technology deployed as part of the project will deliver downstream speeds of up to 80Mbps, and upstream speeds of up to 20Mbps, a vast improvement on the average current downstream speed in Wales of around 5-6 Mbps. This improvement will revolutionise access to the online world for homes and businesses alike, from the sharing of pictures and music and the streaming of video and live TV, through to videoconferencing and cloud computing for thousands of businesses and enterprises across Wales.
In addition to the enhanced Fibre to the Cabinet infrastructure, Fibre to the Premises technology (where fibre goes directly to homes and businesses) will also be available on demand, allowing users to opt for even faster connection speeds of up to 100Mbps.
BT’s network will be open to all communications providers on an equal, wholesale basis, allowing consumers and businesses in Wales the full benefits of a competitive marketplace.
Through partnership with the Welsh Government, BT is leading the way in taking Wales forward into the digital age. The investment scheduled to take place over the next few years will ensure that Wales sets the pace for the continuing high-speed revolution, and leads the way as a truly digital nation.
The Welsh Government and European Regional Development Fund has also jointly funded a programme of free advice for businesses who want know how they can make the most of digital technologies.
So far, the Superfast Business Wales programme has helped more than 3000 Welsh businesses to use digital to potentially reduce the cost of running their business, as well as save time, grow profits and improve stability.
